I thought his painting was impressive from the first glimpse. I really liked hers but, like others, wasn’t sure that it looked like her. I’ve reconsidered; the issue for me, at least, is that I generally picture her smiling. But when she is not, I find there to be a strong resemblance to the painting. And I’m glad that both of them pushed boundaries, at a time in which those boundaries especially need to be pushed. Personally, I love African-American art and have a number of pieces in my home, so I’d love to see it get the recognition it deserves.
